The Personal Side of Bias, Prejudice, and Oppression

The Personal Side of Bias, Prejudice, and Oppression

I think a few months ago I did a mock trial on a friend to which he had as a selfish, materialistic, and I think she is rude and never thought of others just live and think for her. But one day I decided to open up and know her well, talk deep with her, and now I really see who she was, I felt so bad for all these years thinking bad about her, I decide that moment to be honest with her and I said her that I thought she was different, but I was thinking in a bad way of her all of this time. “everyone is a prisoner of his own experiences, No one can eliminate prejudices-just recognize them. ”Edward Roscoe Murrow,1995.

How important is to really know the others, do not judge people without knowing them, we need to be more open and not live and grow with these prejudices, that hurt us. Prejudice, oppression “Can affect our individual sense of self and undermine our healthiest and fullest development as human beings.”( Derman- Sparks. Anti-Bias Education.2010.pag.25)

This incident is for me a huge opportunity, because from now I’ll do false testimony of the people, and I will try to see things in a more open way, we need to accept our difference, and always start t respecting all the people as they are.

  1. Thank you for your post Maria. I too find myself making quick judgements about others at times. I think sorting is something we do when we meet new people. First impressions are a powerful thing. It is humbling to be wrong about someone once you get to know them better. I am glad that you were able to have a heart to heart discussion about your impressions about this woman and that you walked away better informed and closer to her.

  2. Hi Maria. I like all of the quotes you posted especially this one, everyone is a prisoner of his own experiences, No one can eliminate prejudices-just recognize them.’ Racism is a moral issue; racism is a political issue. We should make every effort to insure that each individual is allowed his or her “inalienable rights” as outlined in the constitution. This will be an ongoing process as lawmakers face the new challenges brought about by the ever-increasing diversity of the population. The greater need is that of the individual. Until we as a people learn to see each other through the eyes of God, we will never see one another without fear and prejudice. Thanks for sharing this wonderful post, Maria… Jay

  3. Maria,
Thank you for your honest post. I think it is human nature to develop first impressions about people we are in contact with, even casually. It took a lot of grace and humility to admit to the person how you had been feeling towards her. I don't think many people take the time to confess those types of feelings. Your post has reminded me not to jump to conclusions about others until I can know them well enough to make a conclusion.

  4. Hello Maria, I really agree with you totally. Sometime we just look on the outside and can't see what's on the inside. We all in some point of time being guilty in our lives about some kind of judgment. We should do exactly what you did Sister Maria confront the person by going to them and them alone and discuss the situation with them. Because they know better than anyone else. Remember never judge a book by its cover! Good Post.
