Welcoming Families From Around the World

TURKISH, FAMILY

·         Having a strong teacher parent relationship, providing them strategies to support, maintain, preserve home language learning. So is important to invite parents to share with class typical food, cultural items, holiday traditions, songs.

·         Keep the family informed about class topics and activities.

·         Learning a few words in the child’s home language also shows the children that you are making an effort to help them succeed in the classroom.

·         Provide a welcoming environment , having signs in Turkish language in our class, post a welcome sign on the door in Turkish .

·         Creating a good environment helping the children to develop confidence, self-esteem, and positive cultural identity, is our responsibility as educators to c a classroom community that is accepting of all of our students, no matter their communications abilities, their physical abilities, and their cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Is important to have a good parent relationship, we could learn from each other, I would learn from the parents some Turkish words means for helping the children in understand in a better way another language. Also creating an environment of respect, love that allows children to really feel important, supported, is important to know the needs and characteristics of each individual child.

So the challenge for a teacher is to provide high-quality care education for the children who are likely to be linguistically and cultural diverse.

  1. Sounds like a good plan to welcome a child from Turkey into your early childhood center. There are lots of resources on the web to familiarize you with the language. It would surely go a long way if you were able to greet the family in their native language on your first meeting.

  2. I think the families from Turkey are great examples to those of the U.S., I think if the parents from the U.S. take heed of what to say, how to support, and love on your children. It would be a better society in the U.S.

  3. Hi Maria. I also chose to do my family from Turkey. It is vitally important to create a good environment that builds their confidence, self-esteem and self-awareness. I also wanted to note Turkey has gone through an enormous process of change in the last decade, especially regarding the political recognition of ethno-cultural and religiously diverse groups. Globalization has made the movements of persons or groups in the ethnoscape easier. It is apparent that the management of diversity has posed a great challenge for nation states as well as for the international and supranational organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union (EU). Another great post, Maria
